Knowledge and Cognition

The Knowledge and Cognition research center aims to be a sharing referent point for cultural and scientific debate among scholars who, from the fields of humanities, social sciences and philosophy, would dialogue on the emerging forms of knowledge and cognition.

Scientific Coordinator - Francesco Bianchini

The activity of the Knowledge and Cognition research center is based on the interdisciplinary collaboration of the different scientific fields of the FILCOM Department. The principal aim is to create a concrete space of dialogue between the philosophical, historical, cognitive, communication and social sciences, both aggregating and redeveloping existing resources, and enhancing convergence and cooperation between the various areas, especially from the scientific and higher education standpoint (e.g., supporting the research and teaching activities for the FILCOM PhD program in Philosophy, Science, Cognition and Semiotics (PSCS)).

Furthermore, the Knowledge and Cognition research center works to (i) support the recruitment of figures with unconventional curriculum vitae, with skills in different disciplinary fields and highly innovative research topics; (ii) establish long-term international relationships to foster applications for the Horizon projects such as ERC, ERC Synergy and Marie Curie; (iii) encourage the ingoing and outgoing exchange between universities, professions and the economic and commercial entities.

The Knowledge and Cognition research center, performing the specific purposes for which it is constituted in relation to the Strategic Development Project of the Department of Philosophy and Communication, works in connection with all the scientific-disciplinary fields of the Department. In order to ensure this cohesion, the Department Council is recognized as having a more general direction and coordination function which all the center's activities must comply with.

Some of the main lines of research are:

  • False, truth and models of knowledge
  • Emotions
  • Demonstration and argumentation
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Conflict processes
