Contrastive theories of "ought" are based on the idea that what ought to be is determined by the best alternatives from a given set of alternatives. In Kripkean terms, this means that, rather than looking at a set of possible worlds and an ordering on them, we need to look at an ordered partition P of the set of possible worlds. Following Yalcin, Cariani (Noûs, 2011) calls such a P the "resolution" of the modal base (the set of possible worlds), and hence speaks of a resolution semantics for ought.

In this talk, I will consider some ways to define an ought-to-be operator on the basis of a resolution, including the one by Cariani. I will explain how the resulting logics can be seen as fragments of normal (multi)modal logics. On the basis of this, I show how one can determine the logical properties of the respective ought-to-be-operators. If time permits, I will also look at the relation between resolution semantics and Horty's logic of ought to do.
