This session will provide a visual biography of data visualisation at the Financial Times. The evolving relationship between the news and data visualisation has been deeply affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, accelerating public demands for insight and placing greater demands on factors like chart literacy. The talk will articulate key elements of the Financial Times's strategy for data visualisation and its implementation.

Alan Smith is Head of Visual and Data Journalism at the Financial Times, leading an interdisciplinary team of journalists in London, New York and Hong Kong. An experienced presenter, Alan has lectured extensively on how to communicate with data. His TEDx talk "Why you should love statistics" was a TED.com featured talk in 2017. Previously, he worked at the UK's Office for National Statistics where he founded its award-winning Data Visualisation Centre.

Alan received a BA in Geography from the University of Lancaster and holds an MSc in GIS from Salford University. He was appointed OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in Queen Elizabeth II's 2011 Birthday Honours list. You can follow him at twitter.com/theboysmithy 

Giorgia Aiello is Associate Professor in Sociology of Culture and Communication at the University of Bologna and Professor of Culture and Communication at the University of Leeds, in the UK. She has published widely on the problems and potentials of commercial, documentary, political and news imagery in contemporary culture and society.
