In this lecture, I discuss how we have experienced what modernity has called progress and what Critical Theory refers to as regressions (a concept taken from psychoanalysis). I explain how “waves” of progress and regression have been interpreted in both ancient and modern history; waves that bring unresolved problems to the surface and in which narratives of utopias and dystopias emerge, allowing us to understand the reflexivity around experiences of improvement and moral unlearning.
